Born in England, Victor studied Romance Languages at the University of London before training at Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. After gaining experience as an actor in repertory he started working as a freelance director in commercial theatre and between engagements began to establish a career in film and television. During the 1970s he worked extensively in the UK, Europe, Africa, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, directing a wide variety of theatre productions – from the hit comedy Two and Two Make Sex to the quintessential musical My Fair Lady – and was fortunate to be able to work with such stage luminaries as Judi Dench, Margaret Lockwood, Rita Tushingham and Richard Todd.
In the early 1980s he set up home in Melbourne; and although mainly working in the film and television industry nowadays, he keenly undertakes theatre engagements whenever possible. Among his Australian theatre directing credits are the musical Blues in the Night, the award-winning comedy Funny Peculiar, the popular thriller Deathtrap and his highly-acclaimed production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
Since the mid-90s he has worked primarily as a screenwriter and lyricist. He wrote the documentary films Smithy Revisited, Present Day Dinosaurs, and Much Ado About Shakespeare. His screenplays include the miniseries Requiem for a Wren and the feature films McGregor Rules, The Last Supper, The Madness That Was Kolberg, Stoker’s Boat, Rockphony, Hit the Ground Running and Dalkeith, which screened at the Australian Film Festival in London. For the theatre, he penned the musical review Rome and All That Jazz and an adaptation of Pirandello’s Six Character in Search of an Author, which was presented at the Melbourne Fringe Festival; and for the musical stage he wrote the book and lyrics for A Little Bit of Fluff, Atlantis, Rebecca and The Mapmaker’s Opera.
